After talking to the band we are going to be promoting, Electric Gypsies, they gave us a better understanding of the type of music they produce. The music genre they fall under is classic rock. This falls under the parent genre of rock which originated as "rock and roll" in the United States in the early 1950s, and developed into a range of different styles in the 1960s and later, particularly in the United Kingdom and in the United States. Classic rock grew out of a radio format that used to be called AOR -- Album Oriented Rock. Classic rock describes entire albums, whereas the oldies genre encompasses primarily pop singles that were commercially successful. Classic rock developed in the 1960s and is a genre of music that combines a particular guitar-driven rock sound with a particular era of time. The classic rock era began with bands like The Beatles and Rolling Stones, diversifying into bands like Led Zeppelin and The Doors. Classic rock is heavily influenced by region, and in ways that are unexpected. The traditional classic rock genre usually ends in the 1960s. Some of the top major bands of this genre are Led Zepplin, Rolling Stones, The Who, Pink Floyd, and Janis Joplin.
Led Zepplin
The Rolling Stones
Since our band is a cover band they aren't necessarily restricted into staying in this specific genre, but they do want to stay under the broader genre of rock. The music they like to perform adheres to the typical characteristics of the classic rock or rock and roll genre.
