There are many different conventions that typical of a rock genre music video. A typical music video in this genre can go a few a of many ways.
Performance Based
Concert:
In some classic music videos they show just a recorded live performance in which the band will be running around playing their hearts out to the crowd and one another. This can be shown through a live performance at a concert, so nothing that is being recorded is staged for the music video specifically.
Examples: System of a Down’s “Chop Suey”, AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck”
Set:
This is where the music video mainly focuses on the band performing, but the performance is staged specifically for the music video. One typical location of this type of music video is a clean warehouse or some type of large open space, so all the focus can be on the band. This type of music video included various close-up of the members and the instruments to get every "angle" of the performance.
Examples:Green Day’s “American Idiot”
Both these types of music videos work extremely well when you want to showcase a new band and expand on their brand and personality. The band has to be extremely engaging in order to keep the audience captivated.
Narrative:
One type of route a rock video can go is that of the narrative where is a storyline is created in order to develop a specific tone and mood or convey the idea of the song. The audience will easily be able to link the song to the story. This type of music video can also be mixed with performance-based videos and showcase the band as well as develop the meaning of the song visually.
Examples: Aha’s “Take On Me”, Aerosmith’s “Janie’s Got A Gun”
Concept Based
tend to have no storyline, they are generally a random concept and sometimes tends to not tie in with the band or theme of the song at all. The concept is supposed to keep the audience entertained.
Examples: OK GO's "Here It Goes Again".
Other conventions of a typical music video includes sound mixing, mise-en-scene elements such as costume and makeup, as well as props.
