How to Photoshoot a Rock Band

Knowing how to photoshoot a band is important in order to provide the correct exposure to an audience. The better the preparation the smoother everything will work out on the day of the shoot.

Here are some tips for band promotional photography

  1. Meet the band before and get a feeling for their music: Use this meeting to identify the style of pictures they want to go for and what they will be using the pictures for.
  2. Scout locations: Don’t be afraid to ask the band if they have a location in mind, ask your friends and family as well.
  3. Find cohesive outfits for the band members: Try to get them to match the location and the style of the shoot. In some situation, you might want to go the absolute opposite way, but it has to fit the purpose. No one member of the group should stand out
  4. Have a list of pictures you want to have during the session: You’d rather have a few sets that are well executed and some time left for improvisation than hurrying through your sets and missing some important issues with the lighting or positioning of the band.
  5. Always be on the lookout for nice photo opportunities between sets: if the group is small enough you might get some keepers from these shots. A second shooter would come in handy here.

Here are some ideas of some pictures we'd like to get of the band.
